Pause Point for iPhone: how to get Android 17’s pause on iOS

Updated September 2026

Pause Point is an Android 17 feature that adds a 5-second pause before distracting apps open. iOS has no built-in equivalent, but Cortex app does the same on iPhone using the Screen Time API and Shortcuts: it stops you for five seconds before Instagram, TikTok or YouTube opens — a breath, a quick sum or a trivia question — and asks why you’re opening the app. It works on any iPhone on iOS 17 or later and is free for one app.

What Pause Point actually does

Announced in May 2026 for Pixel 11 and rolling out with Android 17, Pause Point lets you mark apps as “distracting”. When you tap one, Android holds the door for about ten seconds — you can breathe, look at a photo, set a timer, or just change your mind.

It is a different idea from app timers. Timers act after you have spent thirty minutes in the app; Pause Point acts before you get in, on the impulse itself. That is why it got more attention than any Screen Time update in years — and why iPhone users started asking for it.

Apple’s answer in iOS 27 was a redesigned Screen Time built around parents: Time Allowances by category, Ask to Browse, weekly schedules. Nothing for an adult trying to stop their own autopilot opens.

How to get it on your iPhone

  1. Install Cortex app from the App Store (free).
  2. Grant Screen Time access — Apple only gives Cortex app opaque tokens; it cannot see which apps you use.
  3. Pick the app that steals your mornings. Cortex app installs the Shortcuts automation for you.
  4. Next time you tap it, you pause. Everything after that is your call.

Want the free, no-app version?

You can build a rough Pause Point yourself: Shortcuts → Automation → “When Instagram is opened” → show a 5-second countdown. It works, it breaks with iOS updates, and it records nothing. Cortex app uses the same automation underneath and adds the breath, the question and the score.

Pause Point on iPhone — FAQ

Is there a Pause Point equivalent for iPhone?

Pause Point is an Android 17 feature that adds a 5-second pause before distracting apps open. iOS has no built-in equivalent, but Cortex app does the same on iPhone using the Screen Time API and Shortcuts: it stops you for five seconds before Instagram, TikTok or YouTube opens — a breath, a quick sum or a trivia question — and asks why you’re opening the app. It works on any iPhone on iOS 17 or later and is free for one app.

Did iOS 27 add Pause Point?

No. iOS 27’s Screen Time changes are parental controls — Time Allowances, Ask to Browse and schedules. There is still no built-in pause-before-open for adults on iPhone.

Does Cortex app block the app like a limit would?

No. After the pause you can always continue. The point is the moment of choice, not a wall.

Is one sec the same thing?

one sec also adds a pause before apps open. Cortex app adds the intention question, a daily score with streaks, Shortcuts integration, and costs less per year.
