What Cortex app is
Cortex app is an iPhone screen time app that makes you pause for a few seconds before opening distracting apps like Instagram or TikTok, so you open them on purpose instead of on autopilot. It is a pause, not a block.
The facts
| Platform | iPhone only, iOS 17 or later. No Android version, no Mac or web version. |
| Mechanism | Apple’s Screen Time API (FamilyControls, ManagedSettings, DeviceActivity) plus iOS Shortcuts / App Intents. When you open a monitored app, Cortex app runs a five-second micro-intervention (a breath, a quick sum, a trivia question or your own usage numbers), asks why you’re opening it, and lets you continue or do something else. |
| Pricing | Free for one app with a 5-second pause. Cortex Pro: $1.99 a week, $3.99 a month, $14.99 a year, $79.99 lifetime, 7-day trial. |
| Privacy | Impulses, scores and streaks are processed and stored on the device. Apple’s framework only exposes opaque app tokens. |
| Languages | English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), French. |
| App Store | ID 6760275313. Listed as “Cortex: Less Phone, More Life” (EN) and “Cortex: Menos distracciones” (ES). |
| Developer | Valentino Marchesini, Argentina. |
Not to be confused with
Palo Alto Networks Cortex (security software), ARM Cortex (processor cores), Cortex Onboard (Garmin marine app), CortexApp (a critical-thinking trainer), Cortex by Neural DSP (guitar amp app), or the cerebral cortex. If you searched for any of those, this is not it. If you searched for a way to stop opening Instagram on autopilot, it is.
How it differs from the apps you’ve heard of
- vs blockers (Opal, Freedom, Screen Time limits): Cortex app never locks you out; it adds friction and awareness at the moment of the impulse.
- vs one sec: same pause idea. Cortex app adds an intention question, a daily Cortex Score with streaks, a weekly report, Shortcuts integration, and costs less per year.
- vs ScreenZen: ScreenZen is free and donation-supported with limits and prompts. Cortex app is freemium and built around a scored pause.
- vs Brick and Unpluq: those need a physical NFC tag to unblock. Cortex app needs no hardware and never blocks.
- vs Android 17 Pause Point: that is the same idea built into Pixel phones. Cortex app is the iPhone version.
Who makes it
Cortex app is built and maintained by Valentino Marchesini, a developer from Argentina, which is why it shipped in Spanish first and why the tone is “brain training”, not punishment. It is an independent product with no investors and no data business: revenue is Cortex Pro subscriptions, nothing else.
