What the number means

4.4 hours a day is 1,600 hours a year — around 270 books, or an hour-long workout every day of the year, four times over.

Averages hide the shape: most of that time is not one long session but dozens of short opens, a large share of them on autopilot. Our own data across 92,000 interventions shows the same pattern in every country — Instagram first, evenings worst, and a pause that works twice as well when the person names the open “autopilot”.

Mexico is the largest Spanish-speaking iPhone market in absolute terms, and INEGI’s survey is the rare official, national measurement of daily hours — most countries only have GWI panel estimates.

Sources and method

Each figure links to the page it was taken from. DataReportal country reports measure users and connections (Kepios analysis, October 2025); daily time on social media is a GWI survey estimate for internet users aged 16–64 (Q3 2024), as published in DataReportal’s Digital 2025 and charted by Visual Capitalist; Mexico’s hours are INEGI’s ENDUTIH 2024 household survey. Questions

How many hours a day do Mexicans spend on social media?

The GWI/DataReportal chart we use does not publish a Mexico figure. INEGI’s ENDUTIH 2024 measures 4.4 hours a day of internet use per user, 97% of it on smartphones.

Is this phone time or social media time?

Total internet time on any device; INEGI reports that 97.2% of users connect via smartphone.

Why do figures differ between sources?

Different survey waves (GWI publishes quarterly), different age ranges, and different questions (social media vs internet vs phone unlocks). We cite one source per figure and date it.
