Pause Point

Pause Point is an Android 17 feature that holds a user-selected “distracting” app for about ten seconds before it opens, offering a breath, a photo, a timer or the option to change your mind. On iPhone, the equivalent is provided by third-party apps such as Cortex app.

Announced by Google in May 2026 and shipped first on the Pixel 11, Pause Point moves the intervention from after use (app timers) to before it: the pause fires on the tap, when the impulse is still an impulse. During the pause Android can guide a breath, show a favourite photo, start a timer, or suggest another app.

It is the first time a platform vendor has built friction-before-open into the operating system. Apple’s iOS 27, released the same year, added parental controls but no equivalent for adults, so on iPhone the pattern exists only as third-party apps using the Screen Time framework — one sec, ScreenZen and Cortex app among them.
